Cal Ripken, Jr., 1994 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Silver Signature #240

It takes a very special photo to ground a baseball card in a specific moment in baseball history, or even history in general. Take a look at that big, blocky, gray cordless phone in Cal Ripken's hand and you're transported back in time to the days before Blackberries and iPhones, a time when you had to have significant upper body strength to hoist a phone and its clunky battery to your ear. We are living in the future.

Back about 20 years ago I had a 'Guys on the phone' collection, I kid you not. Most of them were cards of quarterbacks on sideline phones or headsets but this card and a couple more were from the world of baseball. I still have the cards in pages in a binder stored away.

Bob - I know that the ladies at Dinged Corners collected outdated technology cards: old phones, big bulky TV cameras, etc. Not a bad side hobby.
