Orioles Card "O" the Day

An intersection of two of my passions: baseball cards and the Baltimore Orioles. Updated daily?

Brian Roberts, 2008 Topps Stadium Club #34

This is a hit-and-run entry today, as my to-do list is pretty substantial. We're hosting my sister's birthday party tonight, so I have to clean the rat's nest that is my living quarters. Of course, this task mostly involves baseball cards: I have several stacks of Orioles that I need to sort and store, and several more that just came in the mail and need to be cataloged and then sorted. This includes today's featured card, which arrived this afternoon from Greg of the night owl blog. This is instantly one of the best cards in my growing Brian Roberts collection, a great action shot of the diminutive second baseman applying Tito Santana's trademark flying forearm to an unidentified Rangers catcher. I'd like to imagine that he's shouting, "This is for 30-3, you dirty sonofa..."

I think I've already commented on this before, but I remember the night of that 30-3 game. It was mid-to-late August 2007. I was at home for a week after my college summer classes ended and was getting ready for my internship that fall in Washington, D.C. I was sitting on my couch flipping around the TV, got to MASN, and saw the O's and Rangers playing. The Orioles just went up 3-0 I believe. I nodded off for awhile and then ate dinner and turned back to the game and it was 30-3. I thought maybe I entered some sort of parallel universe or something. Funny thing is I remember the mid-'90s game when the O's were playing the Rangers and were up 7-6...and ended up losing 26-7. Good memories.

Yeah, every time we play the Rangers, it strikes me that the unbalanced schedule might not be the worst thing in the world.

Kevin,

I think this picture is from the July 8, 2007 game at Texas. These are road uniforms, and the eye black makes me think day game. This photo would be Roberts scoring from second on a Markakis single in the top of the first (validated by the clean uniform). That would make your mystery catcher Gerald Laird.

What do you think?

Stacey - Brian is FIERCE.

Tim - At a glance, I'd say that you're dead-on! Even if Brian was wearing eye black when the night games against Texas started, the only other times he scored at Texas were 7th inning or later. Good work!
