No glimpse at a week in O's history would be complete without a drubbing of the loathed Yankees, would it? Despite striking out only one batter in five and one-third innings, Mike Mussina allowed just one run and got plenty of support in winning his tenth game of the season. He was also backed up by three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief from the dream team of Doug Johns, Gabe Molina, and Rocky Coppinger.
The Bird bats enjoyed a rare pounding of traditional Oriole killer Andy Pettitte, who allowed four runs in six innings. But the fun really started when future Baltimore reliever (and performance enhancer abuser) Jason Grimsley came to the mound in relief of Pettitte. The O's crushed him for five more runs in just one and one-third innings, the damage coming via the home run. Cal Ripken, Jr. walloped a two-run shot in the seventh, and B. J. Surhoff turned the game into a true laugher with his 20th longball, a three-run clout in the eighth. The win allowed the Orioles to take two out of three from the first-place pinstripers in the Bronx, which ain't bad.
