Rocky Coppinger, 1997 Skybox Metal Universe #3

After yesterday's horrifying Cal Ripken, Jr. caricature, Commish/Bob left a comment declaring that this must be Weird Card Week on this here blog. I consider myself to be the highly suggestible type, so I've taken the ball and run with it. What, I ask you, could be weirder than Rocky Coppinger delivering a pitch in front of a giant, malevolent, iridescent spider?

  1. LOL I looked at his BR page and he put up some ugly ugly numbers for the O's. He was 4th in R-O-Y voting in '96 with a 5.18 ERA. That's like a highlight and lowlight rolled into one.

  2. Offense was WAY UP that year, but when you adjust for league average and ballpark factors, he's still subpar at a 96 ERA+. And 9.1 hits per 9 innings is still gruesome. He was a distant fourth, for what that's worth, and even then voters were probably swayed because he played for a winner. (Remember when that was a factor for Orioles players?)

  3. H-Man - Yep, he probably needed a man-sere. Oh, and Rocky's career didn't pan out, either.
