Luis Aparicio, 1981 TCMA Stars of the 1960s #358

I want to try something new and (hopefully) fun this evening. This will be the first installment of "Ask an Orioles fan". If you have any questions about Orioles history, the current team, O's cards, or anything else that you can imagine, leave me a comment. As soon as I get it, I'll write back and give you the best answer that I can. I'll start it off:

Q: Why on Earth did it take you twenty months of blogging about the Orioles to post a Luis Aparicio card?

A: I thought I already had gotten to Little Looie. I must have been thinking of Tim Stoddard. The similarities are uncanny.

So there you have it. Now fire away!

  1. Have you posted any cards (if they exist) featuring any of the older Orioles teams, like the minor league teams from the first half of the century with Lefty Grove, or the 19th century teams?

  2. How do you go about getting all of your Orioles cards? I would like to know as I need a lot of the obscure players who might only have a couple of cards featuring them in the black and orange.

  3. Packaddict - I have not. Last year I was in an antique store in Williamsburg, VA and they had a tobacco card of the old Orioles. I was very tempted, but it was $100. I really should keep an eye on eBay and see if I get lucky!

Orioles Magic - I get a lot of cards through trades with other bloggers; most of the time they'll blindly send a bunch of O's and I'll send Mets or Dodgers or whatever team they collect. I also have want lists on my other blog (1965topps.blogspot.com) for the base set O's from Topps, but I really do need to get more organized and make a broader want list for other brands and sets. Let me know what you need; I've got a ton of Orioles doubles as you might imagine.

  4. Thank you Kevin, the guys I need the most are the ones who spent the least amount of time with the team and only have a few Orioles cards. I have plenty of the Bradys, Cals, B-Robs and Markakis' who have a ton of cards produced. If you don't mind sending me some of the more obscure doubles you have I would really appreciate it. I will email you my address.

  5. I'm kind of fascinated by Drungo Hazewood, mostly because of his name. He played with the Orioles for six games in 1980 after being a #1 Draft Pick in 1977. Is there any place to find more info?

  6. Sorry I read it wrong - 19th pick in the first round of the draft. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/hazewdr01.shtml?redir

  7. Anonymous - Beyond his incredible name (the full name is Drungo La Rue Hazewood), there's not much that I know. He attended Sacramento High School, and Wikipedia claims that he was a power hitter who had trouble with curveballs. His minor league numbers bear that out - he whiffed 177 times at AA Charlotte in 1980! Though he topped out at 28 homers, he never hit for average (.240 career) and was out of baseball by age 23.

  8. I've been out of town for a little while now and am only able to see a couple of games at Oriole Park each year. I'm kind of curious as to what song each player has chosen as the one that plays when he comes to bat. Do you know what some of the current players' theme songs are? Past players? It'd be nice to get a good Orioles mix tape together!

Keep up the excellent work on the blog. It's one of my favorite things to read each day.

  9. I remember back in '02ish Jeff Conine played "Tom Sawyer" by Rush when he came up.

  10. Pete - Excellent question! Matt Wieters uses "Hell's Bells" and Chris Ray used "Sweet Dreams" by Marilyn Manson when he was closer. Brian Roberts used to go with "Hypnotize" by Notorious BIG, which was hilarious. Some old players I found online:

    Here's a list for the 2008 lineup.

    A list from 2004 on ESPN.com.

Here's a few more from that era, courtesy of The Orioles Warehouse.

I also remember Jay Gibbons using "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
